This series of samarium cobalt magnets is the first rare earth magnets used. Fairly strong, with a ratio of 1 samarium atom to 5 cobalt atoms, is the more “simple” of the 2.
It can be machined before it is being magnetized and has very good corrosion resistance, so no coating is required. Also known as samarium 1:5 magnets.
Up until recently, it was the preferred choice for application with working temperatures up to 250° Celsius, but the new NdFeB grades (N30AH,N33AH) with a working temperature up to 240° seems like a new and more cost effective choice in some cases.
